David von Rosen: Global cities should unite instead of competing alone

In an article for Arabian Gulf Business Insight, David von Rosen argues that the world’s major cities need to stop competing in isolation and instead work together to drive global innovation and growth. He proposes an “Innovative Cities Compact” between Dubai, Berlin, London and New York to make it easier for entrepreneurs, capital and ideas to move across borders.

"Growth is not a limited resource. The more we create, the more there is to go around."

Von Rosen highlights Dubai as the new front-runner in global technology and innovation, noting its rapid population growth, pro-business policies and ability to attract world-class talent. He predicts that Dubai is on track to outpace London, Berlin and even New York in tech IPOs within the next decade.

He calls on policymakers in other global cities to shift their mindset – seeing Dubai as a partner rather than a rival. The proposed compact would align visa rules, regulatory frameworks and investment initiatives, including potential joint sovereign-backed venture funds.

"The world economy isn’t a zero-sum game. We need to get out of that frame of mind. Growth in Dubai creates jobs and generates tech breakthroughs that benefit everyone."
